TV show sees couple's dream house collapse
Last April, fans of the British television show Grand Designs trembled in front of their TV screens.
In the show, Kevin McCloud, British presenter and designer, goes to meet families who have plans to build their dream home.
During a special episode “unusual architectural projects”, Kevin McCloud and viewers were surprised by a crazy scene. The episode retraced the journey of Richard Hawkes (49 years old) and his wife Sophie (50 years old), a couple who had decided to build a house by “defying the laws of gravity” in Kent (south-east of London). To achieve their goal, Richard and Sophie had given builders the mission of creating a green roof in the shape of an arch. “The problem? The roof was very fragile and the builders were instructed not to lean on the structure during the work,” reports Demotivateur.
As the presenter was giving an overview of the work and its progress, facing the cameras, part of the roof suddenly collapsed behind him. Talking to The Sun, the owner recounted: "I was standing next to the cameraman. We heard a huge crash (...) One of the workers leaned too much on the first layer of tiles and fell." The contractor, who was completely distraught by the incident, was in tears!
Fortunately, there were no serious injuries: "on site, we were relieved to see that none of the other 15 people working on the site had been injured," explains Richard. The craftsman rebuilt the roof, in exchange for the £200,000 paid by the owners.
"Within a week, we were back to the way things were before."
