Restaurant charges 58 euros for cutting birthday cake
A restaurant in Arezzo, Italy, has caused a stir on social media by charging a family 58 euros (some 65 US dollar) for cutting and serving a birthday cake they had brought themselves.
An Italian family of 13 wanted to celebrate their mother's birthday with a dinner at a restaurant. Beforehand, they had asked if it was OK to bring their own birthday cake.
Surprisingly they saw at checkout that the cake had been charged €58 ($65), about €4.50 ($5) per guest, while the cake had cost only €45 ($50) at the bakery.
The mother's daughter posted a message in a local Facebook group, eliciting quite a reaction on the social media.
The owner of the restaurant defended the fee in the Italian media by saying it covered the service costs, but admitted that the situation could have been handled better, possibly by reducing the fee or not charging at all.
