"The country where a squirrel has more rights than a girl"
American actress, Meryl Streep, has said that under the current Taliban regime, a squirrel has more rights than an Afghan girl.
Meryl Streep, who was attending an event on the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, called the Taliban's draconian restrictions on women's lives "asphyxiation."
"A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan today because the Taliban have closed public parks to women and girls," she added
"A bird can sing in Kabul, but a girl can't, and a woman can't in public, it's extraordinary. It's a suppression of the law of nature."
Before concluding:
"The way this culture, this society has been turned upside down, is a warning to the rest of the world," said Ms. Streep, who called on world leaders to respond.
A simple message that struck a chord with the UN General Assembly.
