Rush on abortion pills after Trump victory
Following Donald Trump’s re-election, online demand for abortion pills has skyrocketed. Fearing an imminent abortion ban, Americans are rushing to buy the pills while they're still available.
Aid Access, the leading mail-order abortion pill provider in the United States, has seen an unprecedented influx of requests following Trump’s victory. In less than a day, the organization has logged more than 10,000 requests, well above its daily average of 600. Fueled by fears that abortion will eventually be banned, the surge has temporarily taken the site offline.
American women’s concerns are heightened by Trump’s stance. He has previously raised the possibility of a national ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Anticipating tighter restrictions, many women are looking to stock up on abortion pills.
According to data from the Guttmacher Institute, medical abortions are currently on the rise. They now account for 63% of pregnancy terminations in the United States, up from 53% in 2020.
Many experts have expressed concern that Trump’s victory will worsen the attacks on reproductive rights. More restrictive measures risk putting American women in an even more precarious situation, especially after the historic overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Aid Access founder, Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, has assured that the organization will continue to provide access to care despite possible bans.
