US and Russia could team up to topple Zelenskyy

Moscow and Washington have both called for presidential elections in Ukraine, despite the war that has ravaged the country for nearly three years.

This unexpected alignment has sparked fear in Kyiv, as Volodymyr Zelenskyy worries that his strongest ally and his fiercest enemy might join forces to push him out of power. He began his presidential term in May 2019.

Last weekend, Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, said: "In most democracies, elections take place even during wartime. I think it’s important. I believe it’s good for democracy. The beauty of a strong democracy is having more than one potential candidate."

The Kremlin, on the other hand, does not recognize Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the legitimate leader of Ukraine. Recently, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed that his term had already ended.

Following Washington’s lead, Moscow has also called for elections, even as Ukraine insists that a change in leadership is out of the question during wartime.
