No immunity for Trump in the Stormy Daniels affair
The judge in charge of the Stormy Daniels case ruled on Monday that Donald Trump will not benefit from presidential immunity in the case.
The team of the Republican, who in just over a month will be sworn in again as President of the United States, had attempted to file the proceeding, which last spring sat the Republican leader in the dock for allegedly bribing a pornographic actress to keep quiet about the intimate relationship the two allegedly enjoyed. Trump has already been convicted on 34 counts but is still awaiting sentencing.
Juan Merchan, the judge in charge of this sensitive case, rejected the arguments of the president-elect's lawyers seeking to free him from any conviction in the case.
The businessman's defense argued that prosecutors had presented evidence during the trial that was protected by the presidential immunity declared by the Supreme Court. However, the magistrate ruled that these documents related entirely to unofficial conduct and therefore did not benefit from protection of immunity. This is a heavy blow for Donald Trump dealt by the American justice system.
