Russian gas will no longer transit through Ukraine in 2025
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Monday that the agreement allowing Russian gas to transit through Ukraine will not be extended beyond 2025.
After discussions with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Denys Shmyhal wrote on his Telegram account that Ukraine wishes to discuss this agreement solely with Russia.
Although this gas route now accounts for only 5% of the European Union’s gas imports, it remains strategic for three member countries: Austria, Hungary, and especially Slovakia, where 65% of last year’s gas demand was supplied via this pipeline.
"To this effect, if the European Commission officially approaches Ukraine about the transit of any gas other than Russian, we naturally will discuss it and are ready to reach an appropriate agreement," he said.
"I stressed that Ukraine's agreement with Russia on gas transit comes to an end on 1st January 2025 and will not be extended, he added.
