“We must prepare for war” (NATO chief Rutte)
Dutchman Mark Rutte, as NATO secretary general, is calling on Germany to spend more on defense and weapons production.
Rutte does stress that Germany has already done a lot since war broke out in Ukraine. “But given the size of the German economy, of course we want it to do more,” Rutte stated in Bild.
According to NATO boss Rutte, Germany must therefore increase defense spending. “That will be necessary. And Europe's largest economy must produce more weapons. “We have to prepare for war. That is the best way to avoid war”.
NATO countries today must spend 2 percent of their GDP on defense, but a NATO summit in June will negotiate to raise that percentage.
