Greek royal family regains Greek citizenship after 30 years

Because Constantine II refused to renounce the right to the throne, the Greek government took Greek citizenship away from the royal family in 1994.

After years of dispute, last week Constantine's children recognized Greece's status as a presidential parliamentary democracy and renounced all claims to royal authority or titles.

Now, 30 years later, the former royal family is consequently also regaining Greek citizenship.

The members of the former royal family may finally call themselves Greeks again.

A decree published in the Greek Official Gazette granted Greek citizenship to 10 members of the former royal family who recognize the republic after 50 years since the fall of the Greek monarchy. They are the five children of the late King Constantine II and former Queen Anne-Marie, as well as five of their grandchildren. Consequently, they are also given a new surname: “De Grèce,” referring to their royal ancestors.
