Donald Trump claims US can provide ‘freedom’ to Greenland

Donald Trump has expressed confidence that the United States will eventually take control of Greenland after reports surfaced of a contentious phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Since his presidential campaign, Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced interest in the Arctic territory, which has been part of the Danish crown since 1814.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on Saturday, he said: "I think we’re going to have it. I do believe Greenland, we’ll get because it really has to do with freedom of the world. It has nothing to do with the United States, other than we’re the one that can provide the freedom."

Last week, the Financial Times revealed that Donald Trump had called Mette Frederiksen to discuss Greenland's future, but the conversation reportedly turned sour. The U.S. president has threatened multiple times to impose tariffs on Danish exports if the Scandinavian country refused to sell Greenland.

Meanwhile, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, who has expressed aspirations for independence from Denmark, reiterated that Greenland is not for sale but is willing to consider closer ties with the US.
