Turn of events: Euro 5 Diesel will not be banned in 2025

Turn of events. The Brussels region will not be banned from Euro 5 Diesel in 2025. The new coalition of French-speaking parties postpones it to 2027, placing the Dutch-speaking parties in front of a fait accompli.

The Brussels Green parties are disowned, in particular the Dutch-speaking group (Groen). The Brussels LEZ was to be banned from Euro 5 Diesel and Euro 2 petrol from 1 January 2025. This will not happen. The three French-speaking parties of the future majority, including the PS and Les Engagés (CdH at the time) who had participated in setting up the LEZ in 2016, have decided to postpone the deadline by 2 years. The ban will be in 2027, not before.

Why?

They considered that 2025 was penalising for low-income households and certain small businesses who are struggling to change vehicles. And that, overall, the current LEZ had already made it possible to reduce automobile emissions by renewing the vehicle fleet. The three French-speaking parties have chosen "pragmatism". On the Green side, there is talk of a "bomb in the negotiations" and a "pollution coalition". Atmosphere!
