Crazy: 95km/h without hands on German highway

Mercedes has adapted its level 3 autonomous driving system Drive Pilot. It will enable the car drive "alone" up to 95km/h on certain German motorways.

In Germany, the Federal Motor Transport Authority is preparing a certification to allow Mercedes to sell cars capable of driving faster than currently in level 3 autonomous mode on motorways. This authorization is expected by the end of 2024. Cars equipped with Drive Pilot will be able to follow the flow of traffic without driver intervention up to the speed limit of 95 km/h, and not only at low speed in traffic jams.

Not sleeping, but…

The person behind the wheel will be able to let go of the controls and do a secondary activity on appropriate sections. However, they will have to remain ready to react, in particular when the system alerts them and before leaving the motorway section. Mercedes will also offer an update to those who already have the current Drive Pilot system. Ultimately, the manufacturer hopes to automate safe driving up to 130km/h before the end of the decade.
