Bus breaks down on train tracks: Lightning-fast driver saves many children's lives
A bus belonging to transport company De Lijn broke down at a level crossing in the West Flemish town of Veldegem (Zedelgem) on Friday morning. The bus broke down on the train tracks while a train was approaching. On board the bus were around 20 children.
Thanks to the alert reaction of the bus driver, a tragedy could be avoided.
Just before the bus was rammed by an approaching train, the driver was able to evacuate everyone. ‘A catastrophe has been avoided here,’ Mayor Annick Vermeulen (Team Mayor) praised the heroic bus driver.
The collision caused tremendous havoc. The empty bus was reduced to scrap metal. On the train, there were only about 20 passengers and fortunately only two were slightly injured.
