Sex and batteries: a highly dangerous practice
A 73-year-old man was hospitalized after resorting to some surprising (and dangerous) practices
This American's ordeal began when he decided to insert three 1.3-centimetre-wide batteries into his urethra in order to achieve personal pleasure and “self-satisfaction”. A dangerous practice that came at a cost for the septuagenarian, as he had to undergo a delicate and cumbersome operation: a three-stage penis graft. His penis was showing necrotic lesions. According to the journal Urology Case Reports, quoted by Midi Libre, this is “the first reported case of urethral necrosis with insertion of a button battery”.
An atypical injury that gave emergency physicians a great deal of trouble. Initially, they tried to extract the batteries using forceps. A procedure the patient was unable to tolerate, and which gave the doctors no other choice but to consider surgery.
The report speaks for itself: “All the extracted batteries were covered with a black tar-like material. The urethra was re-examined after extraction of all batteries: extensive circumferential burns of the anterior urethra of the penis were noted”.
