"Hell's mouth": Underground world revealed by volcano
The Masaya Volcano, also called “Hell’s Mouth”, is one of the most active in Nicaragua (Central America).
Despite the gases constantly emitted by the crater, green parrots have taken up residence on its walls, giving way to a breathtaking spectacle.
And if the volcano was nicknamed Boca del Infierno, or Hell’s Mouth, by Spanish conquistadors, it's because they thought that Masaya was a gateway to the underworld. The locals had told them that a path led to the bottom of the crater and that they regularly took it to meet a witch, an “old woman with whom they held a secret council”.
