Cliff collapses in England: Tenants wake up with their feet in the air
According to a local photographer, on November 1, the county of Devon in south-west England witnessed a major cliff fall, the “largest collapse” for 35 years.
It's a natural and rather frequent phenomenon in this coastal region, a known geological threat and yet... The scene that unfolded last week didn't fail to impress locals. Following the collapse of a 185-million-year-old cliff, a small cottage was suddenly brought close to the void. Only ten meters or so now separate its inhabitants from the waterfall.
To secure the area, the Sidmouth district closed a frequently used foot path.
Scientist and coastal research expert, Vicky Walkley, explains that these rockfalls are intensified by episodes of heavy rain and hot weather, factors which weaken the cliffs, reports La Dépêche.
This latest collapse is a reminder of just how unpredictable nature can be in this part of the UK, which, although grandiose, remains dangerous.
