150,000 people die each year due to heat waves
Every year, 150,000 people worldwide die from the effects of a heat wave, according to a study by an Australian university.
Australia's Monash University examined the number of deaths that could be related to a heat wave between 1990 and 2019. On average, 153,078 deaths per year died as a result, with an average of 236 deaths per 10 million inhabitants. In Europe, that figure stands at 655 deaths per 10 million inhabitants, with the most victims in Greece, Malta and Italy. In absolute numbers, most people die from heat waves in Asia.
