'Turkey blocks Instagram for one specific reason'
On Friday, without any explanation, access to Instagram was suddenly blocked in Turkey.
Quite a few users living in Turkey reported on X that they could no longer refresh their Instagram feed. The main reason is said to be an attempt at censorship following the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The latter was killed on Wednesday morning in the Iranian capital Tehran. Consequently, a lot of people wanted to post messages of condolence on the social medium, but that was not going to happen. The Turkish president's communications director, Fahrettin Altun, had therefore strongly criticised Instagram on Wednesday, stating then that it "prevents people from posting condolence messages for the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh". "This is a very clear and blatant attempt at censorship," Altun fulminated on X. Consequently, the Turkish state is said to have decided to block Instagram altogether then.
