Trump will destabilize NATO

For Gilles Mentré, former diplomat at the French Embassy in Moscow, who was interviewed on LCI, the position of the future US administration will weaken NATO and possibly fracture the European Union.

For the diplomat,

“If there's opposition within the European Union, it's not so much from Orban's Hungary or Slovakia, who are supporting Russia by saying that we need a ceasefire and that we need to find a peace plan. They are very isolated. On the other hand, from the onset, there has been a tug-of-war between those who want a NATO umbrella, and those who are Atlanticists, who believe that security can only be achieved with the Americans. These include all the Central European countries, led by the Poles and the Netherlands. And opposite them, are the Baltic states.”

The French diplomat takes it further:

“Now that Trump has announced that he's probably going to withdraw, or in any case that he has already weakened NATO, will Poland and the Netherlands understand that we now need to build our own European sovereignty?"

What's interesting is that in the new European Commission, the former Estonian Prime Minister is in charge of European affairs, and the former Lithuanian Prime Minister is in charge of defense, so these are the countries that will now be in charge of building a sovereign Europe and a Europe of defense.
