The US has joined the war
The Kremlin has accused outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden of seeking to escalate tensions in Ukraine by allowing Kyiv to use American weapons exclusively to strike targets in Russia's Kursk region.
The decision, reportedly made on Sunday, has yet to be officially confirmed by the White House as of early this week. However, a German government spokesperson disclosed that they had been informed of the move.
"It is clear that the outgoing administration in Washington intends to take steps to continue to add fuel to the fire and to further inflame tensions around this conflict," Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters.
Russia's Defense Ministry stated that such authorization constitutes "direct involvement by the United States and its allies in hostilities against Russia."
Currently attending the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Joe Biden has not commented on the matter. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the decision, having requested this authorization for months.
In response, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would take “appropriate measures” based on the threat posed by the U.S. arsenal.
"If someone thinks it is possible to supply such weapons to a war zone to attack our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply our weapons," the Russian leader told a press conference in St Petersburg back in June.
