"Putin held hostage by his own lies"
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that Ukraine is currently conducting a special operation to bring the war to the aggressor. Today, the Ukrainian army claims to control more than 1,000 square km in Russia. A confronting turn of events that confronts Vladimir Putin with all his lies and contradictions.
Interviewed by the French media outlet La Dépêche, Vera Grantseva, political scientist and lecturer at the Institute for Political Studies in Paris, France, explains how the Russian President is now caught in the trap of his own misleading statements.
In her view, two major myths have been shattered by this Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory: "that no one would dare invade Russia and that, under Putin, Russia was well protected". She goes on to highlight Putin's responsibility. The head of the Kremlin "has become the hostage of his own lies, and this could have serious consequences for his regime. For two years, there have been incursions at the border, but no real defence has been put in place. This shows that Putin, despite his propaganda, is incapable of protecting the country."
"Putin has spent years building the myth of an invincible Russia, an impregnable fortress with the second largest army in the world", Vera Grantseva continues. "Yet today, Russia is being invaded by Ukraine, who were portrayed as clowns on television. So it's quite humiliating for Putin. It calls into question the credibility of all his threats."
