Poland fears Russian interference in European elections

Following a cyber attack, possibly by Russia, on Polish state news agency PAP on Friday, Poland wants to invest more in cyber security: the minister responsible for digitalisation announced an investment of more than 3 billion zloty, some 700 million euros or 760 million US dollar.

On Friday, a fake report appeared on PAP about a military mobilisation. Since then, fears have been growing in Poland that Russia will interfere in the European elections taking place in the 27 European Union member states from 6 to 9 June.

"We want to allocate more than 3 billion zloty for the construction of a 'cyber shield'," Krzysztof Gawkowski, the minister responsible for digitalisation, said on Monday. "Today, Poland is on the front line of the cyber fight against Russia. Poland has the most attacks. The Russian Federation has only one goal: to destabilise the situation and ensure that the forces supporting the break-up of the EU can take advantage of it."
