"NATO must act now to prevent world war"

For Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a NATO expert and military specialist on chemical weapons, the war could end sooner than expected, and more than likely in a tragic way.

"The West can no longer ignore this threat. We must act now to prevent another world war," he told the Telegraph.

Russia's recent advances on the battlefield are the biggest in a year and a half of conflict.

"The signals from Moscow are far from encouraging," warns the expert, who claims Russia can sustain its military thanks to its "war economy." And he cites a possible date for the end of the conflict, which would be close to the U.S. election. "If Trump comes to power, Putin will only have to hold out until January 2025."

Bretton-Gordon therefore invites the Atlantic Alliance to consider the worst-case scenario. A scenario in which Russia goes ahead and attacks the West. "It is better to stop Russia in Ukraine than on NATO territory. Putin has done nothing to hide his goals, so the West should focus on the conflict rather than climate change if we want to avoid a third world war."
