"NATO may face two nuclear-powered potential adversaries: China and Russia”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg made it clear last weekend that the alliance has no plans to expand its nuclear arsenal, but rather to modernise it.
"There are no plans to expand the number of weapons. What we are doing is replacing our aircraft with new fifth-generation aircraft and the United States is modernising its weapons," he told reporters after meeting at the White House with US President Joe Biden.
In an interview published by British newspaper The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Stoltenberg said NATO members have started consultations on the status and operational capability of their nuclear weapons. Russia interpreted these statements as an attempt at intimidation.
Stoltenberg stated that NATO needs to show its nuclear arsenal to the world to send a direct message to its enemies. According to the secretary-general, NATO may also face a new reality, with not one, but two nuclear-powered potential adversaries: China and Russia.
