Moscow on its knees for YouTube
Russia has asked Google to unblock more than 200 Russian YouTube channels. This was reported by Russian news agency TASS.
The Russian YouTube channels in question were suspended for spreading Kremlin propaganda. And now Russian authorities are making an attempt to allow their content to be redistributed on YouTube. Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor has sent a message with that request to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. These would include channels of media, government agencies, sports clubs, politicians and artists who support Russia's policies.
Russia has already blocked a lot of social media like Facebook and websites itself because it does not tolerate messages from opponents of the Putin regime. YouTube, however, has never been blocked in Russia. Mostly because the Russian alternative Rutube is not getting off the ground.
