Germany could provide game-changing weapon to Ukraine

Germany's opposition leader has expressed willingness to supply long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, but only under certain conditions.

While Germany has been the second-largest supplier of military aid to Kyiv since the war in Ukraine began, Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains opposed to sending these missiles, fearing an escalation in the conflict.

Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU and a candidate for chancellor in next year’s election, has not ruled out the possibility of delivering Taurus missiles. However, he insists that Kyiv must meet specific conditions.

According to Friedrich Merz, if Moscow doesn’t stop targeting civilians in Ukraine, he believes Volodymyr Zelenskyy can use the existing German arsenal without restrictions.

"The next step would be to provide Taurus missiles. After that, it’s up to Russian President Vladimir Putin to decide how far he wants to escalate the war," he told ARD.

The Taurus missile, jointly developed by Germany and Sweden, has a range of 500 km, far exceeding the capabilities of missiles provided by France, the UK, or the United States.

For months, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been urging his allies to allow him to use Western weapons to strike targets inside Russia.
