German Muslim students impose sharia law in their school
Events at a school in Neuss, near Düsseldorf, have caused great outrage in Germany. Four Muslim pupils pressured other pupils and teachers to follow strict Islamic rules.
Fearing reprisals, the pupils and teachers gave in. Some pupils even converted to Islam.
The Muslim students reportedly tried to impose sharia rules for a year. For example, they took time off with other students to pray, demanded a prayer room, demanded that girls and women not make eye contact with boys and men, boys sat at the front of classes and girls at the back.
The police launched an investigation into the extremist activities and German State Security was also called in. North Rhine-Westphalia's interior minister called on parents, teachers and youth workers to be more vigilant about Islamic radicalization among young people.
