Shuttlecocks are becoming more expensive and the Chinese are to blame
Are you a badminton player? Then you must have noticed that the price for badminton shuttles has gone up tremendously recently. We have to look for the reason in China.
For a dozen training shuttles, about 22 euros (24 dollars) have to be paid, for competition shuttles easily double. The price rise is linked to the changing eating habits of the Chinese.
Chinese now eat more pork (because it is cheaper) and the demand for duck and goose meat has decreased. Not only are fewer ducks being slaughtered, it is also being done faster, so there are fewer long duck feathers. Those duck feathers are used to make badminton shuttle. The resulting shortage of feathers has lead to a higher price of badminton shuttles.
