Walking on the beach, mother and daughter come across dinosaur footprints

A mother and her 10-year-old daughter were taking a leisurely stroll on the beach at Penarth (Wales) when a footprint caught their eye. A story told by the BBC

Mother and daughter, who had gone in search of fossils, weren't at all expecting to come across the footprints of a large dinosaur. While the area is renowned for its fossil potential, it was no less of a surprise. As Futura-sciences reports, the footprints resembled nothing more than large holes in a sandstone bed. They were half-buried under the beach pebbles.

Thanks to the spacing, shape and regularity of the marks, the experts were able to confirm the presence of the footprints of a long-necked dinosaur called Camelotia. The herbivore, 3 metres high and 4 to 5 metres long, is thought to have lived in this area of England almost 200 million years ago.

Good to know

The southern part of England is known for its beaches with fossiliferous potential. Numerous footprints can be seen on the Isle of Wight and at Bexhill-on-Sea.
