Panic as sailor surrounded by 1000 whales

The spectacle is very unusual. While Tom Waddington was rowing across the Atlantic, no fewer than a thousand whales suddenly surrounded his boat.

As a professional ski instructor, Tom Waddington was in the middle of the North Atlantic when nearly 1,000 “pilot whales,” known for being very sociable, gathered around his boat and followed him for hours, reports Science et Vie. “It was absolutely incredible. I love it, but I’m afraid they’ll hit my rudder,” the athlete told the Washington Post.

“They’re so close I can hear them. They’re blowing bubbles, look! What a pleasure. I saw a lot of whales. They just came to say hello. I’m refreshed after feeling depressed because of the rain this morning. They were just playing and going under the boat while I was taking videos (…) I've been rowing with these thousands of whales for two hours now,” he said.

An encounter he will not forget any time soon!
