In Switzerland, you can now talk to Jesus

The city of Lucerne in Switzerland is offering people the chance to converse with Jesus.

As part of the centennial celebration of the Swiss Saint Luke Society, Saint Peter’s Chapel has introduced an artificial intelligence that represents Christ. The project, called ‘Deus in Machina’, allows visitors—both the faithful and the curious—to speak with a multilingual Jesus.

The AI installation is located in one of the chapel’s confessionals and is designed to facilitate discussions about spirituality.

Marco Schmid, a theologian at Saint Peter’s Chapel, explained to The Guardian: “We wanted to see and understand how people would react to an AI representation of Jesus. What would they talk about? Would they find value in speaking to Him? We’re likely pioneers in this field.”

The AI has been trained in theology and responds to questions on spiritual topics.

Since its launch in August, thousands of people—some traveling from across the globe—have interacted with the virtual Jesus. Reactions to the experience have been mixed so far.
