Life expectancy to reach 140 years old
The oldest person to date was Jeanne Calment, a French woman who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 5 months. No other person in the world has reached such an old age in the past twenty-five years.
Chaim Cohen, a scientist from Israel, believes that in the future more and more people will exceed the age of 100 or even 120. It is even possible that they will live to be 140 years old. The Israeli scientist conducts research in the molecular biology of aging at Bar Ilan University.
Last year, a study concluded that the lifespan of humans has a natural upper limit. Researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York considered the chance that a person will ever live longer than 125 years to be extremely low.
Israeli scientist Cohen has a different opinion on this: "The findings provide strong evidence that similar interventions in humans could significantly increase average and maximum life expectancy". He says that if the aging process itself is manipulated, life expectancy can also increase beyond 120 years. He based this on a study of human mortality data from 1900 to 2010, as well as experiments with mice, rats and flies. By changing diet, certain medications and genetic manipulation, it's possible to extend life expectancy by up to thirty percent, Cohen claims.
