Assassination attempt on American soldier in Belgium
Mahmud S. wanted to avenge his wife's death in February this year by killing an American military from Kleine-Brogel with a knife.
Mahmud S.'s wife had been killed in a traffic accident in the Netherlands. The now 25-year-old R.W. from the United States, an American military stationed at the army base in Kleine-Brogel, Belgium, was behind the wheel of the vehicle that hit Mahmud S.'s wife. However, there were no aggravating circumstances. She had not been drinking and there was no excessive speed. So a regrettable accident with fatal consequences. But Mahmud S. saw that differently. He took matters into his own hands, sought out the American soldier in Belgium and stabbed her with a knife. The woman suffered life-threatening injuries.
Two heroic neighbors of the soldier rushed to help, while one of them took care of the badly bleeding American, the other Fleming managed to overpower the perpetrator during his attempt to flee. But Mahmud S. pulled a knife and also wounded the neighbor, who then eventually had to let him go.
International cooperation between Belgium, the Netherlands and the United States allowed the perpetrator to be tracked down a short time later. However, it was too late to prosecute him as Mahmud S. was found dead, he had committed suicide. This week, the case was entirely closed before the council chamber in Hasselt, Belgium. The U.S. soldier survived the assassination attempt.
The U.S. Army donated a medal to the helpful and heroic neighbor in recognition of saving the life of an American military.
