Dad tries to save daughter but drowns himself
A 50 year old man from the Netherlands died last weekend on the beach at Grand Crohot, nearly 50 kilometers west of Bordeaux.
The Dutch tourist wanted to help his daughter who got into trouble in the water, but paid for it with his own life.
In the French media, we get more details about the accident: the Dutch girl got into trouble because of a deep swell pit. That is a depth between sandbanks off the coast where strong currents pose danger and can drag swimmers out to sea. Her 50-year-old father wanted to rescue her, but was himself swept away by the current and drowned. The girl was eventually able to swim to the beach by herself.
Other beachgoers did not hesitate and pulled the man out of the water. However, he could no longer be resuscitated. There were no more lifeguards present because the beach was only guarded until 7 p.m. and the accident happened 45 minutes later.
