Caught drinking alcohol in public in Ibiza? 1500 euro fine!
In the fight against mass tourism, the Spanish islands of Mallorca and Ibiza have taken new measures.
Local authorities want to drastically curb the nuisance of mass tourism and the associated misuse of alcohol. In certain zones on the islands of Majorca and Ibiza, such as Palma, Magaluf, Llucmajor and Sant Antoni de Portmany, alcohol can no longer be sold in shops between 9.30pm and 8am.
Another new measure is a fine for those who do not comply with the ban on drinking alcohol in public in certain areas of the islands: that fine can range from 500 to 1,500 euros.
With the new measure, the Balearic Islands want to boost their image and ensure "responsible tourism and improve the quality of tourist zones". Speaking to the BBC, a press officer at the Balearic Islands tourism council stated that he hopes the law will no longer be needed in three or four years, "if we instil in people how to behave."
