Russia wants to ruin everything
Moldova fears that Russia may interfere in its upcoming presidential elections, set to take place this Sunday.
Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern that Moscow is deliberately sending large numbers of people to vote at the Russian embassy in the capital.
“[Moldova] calls on the Russian authorities and other parties to refrain from actions that could disrupt the electoral process through illegal means or artificially create the appearance of crowds at the polling stations,” the ministry said in a statement.
This weekend, the Eastern European country will elect a new president and vote on whether to amend the constitution to pave the way for joining the European Union in the near future.
Current president Maia Sandu is widely favored to win re-election against the nine other registered candidates.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Moldova has moved closer to Europe, and the EU has granted the country candidate status.
Meanwhile, Moscow has denied allegations of interference, but Russia’s Defense Ministry accused Moldova of printing only 10,000 ballots for the 500,000 Moldovans living in Russia.
