A whale swims in the Seine River

A whale has been spotted in the Seine estuary. It's a humpback whale that has been swimming between Rouen and Le Havre since October 12.

Whales sometimes pass along the French coast. But entering the Seine is less common. A humpback whale is making a short excursion between Le Havre and Rouen. It has already been spotted by many people, particularly near the Normandy bridge. They were intrigued by the spray of water that accompanies its breathing on the surface. The animal seems in good health and is moving quickly according to the Pelagis observatory in La Rochelle. The authorities are avoiding giving the precise location of the sightings of the whale in order to avoid crowds. The 11m to 18m long animal is a protected species. However, the Rouen harbor master's office has issued a notice to sailors. The weight of a humpback whale varies from 25 to 40 tons depending on its age and state of health.
