Rapprochement between the West and Russia?
Russia and some Western countries exchanged 26 prisoners on Thursday. These released prisoners included US journalist Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan. Turkey coordinated the international prisoner swap.
It involved the largest prisoner exchange between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War. The 26 prisoners involved are from Russia, Belarus, the United States, Germany, Slovenia, Poland and Norway.
US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris welcomed the three Americans who were part of the prisoner swap between the West and Russia on Thursday night just before midnight local time at Joint Base Andrews military aviation base in the state of Maryland. Relatives of the released prisoners were also waiting for them at the airport.
