Melania Trump continues to distance herself
Now back in the role of First Lady, she insists she retains full “independence”.
In an interview with Fox & Friends (on Fox News), the former Slovenian supermodel looks back on her first experience as First Lady, and confides that she didn't receive “much support” during this period. According to her, “some people” saw her as “just the President's wife”. Is this why Melania Trump kept such a low profile during her husband's campaign? She doesn't say...
Nevertheless, she stresses that she isn't to be confused with the president-elect. “I remain upright in my boots, independent. I have my own opinions, my own yeses and noes. I don't always agree with what my husband says". And that's good. She had already displayed this distance in her book, Melania. Indeed, in her writings, she recounts opposing Donald Trump on the issue of voluntary termination of pregnancy, declaring that women's bodies belonged to them. As the media reports, during his first term, the Republican billionaire had made abortion almost impossible in several states.
Moreover, Melania Trump feels that she “hasn't been understood” by the public. And to avoid questions about her trips to the White House, she explains that she has gone ahead and packed her “suitcases for Washington D.C.”. Melania Trump nonetheless reserves the right to visit “the White House” whenever necessary. And when she wants to join her son, she'll go to New York, where he's studying. “My priority is to be a mother, a first lady, a wife,” she clarified.
Melania Trump will thus be an autonomous First Lady, free to choose and say what she wants, when she wants.
