Hamas political leader killed: 'Cowardly act that will not go unpunished'
On Wednesday morning at around 2am, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed at a special residence for war veterans in northern Tehran. He was attacked there by a "guided missile from the air". Haniyeh was travelling to Iran for the inauguration of the Iranian president.
Haniyeh was a Palestinian politician who was considered the main political leader of Hamas.
Officially, the killing has not yet been claimed, but Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is already condemning the "cowardly murder" of Ismail Haniyeh. As does Iran's Foreign Ministry, which says the assassination will "strengthen deep and unbreakable ties between Tehran, Palestine and the resistance".
The attack was in retaliation for a Hezbollah attack on Majdal Shams, a village in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which killed 12 children on Saturday.
