Born on 22 August: Dua Lipa, cosmopolitan and worldwide disco-pop
The British worldwide star of Albanian and Kosovan origin celebrates her 27th birthday today.
Right from the start, in 2017, with an eponymous album, she had one hit after another: ‘IDGAF’ and ‘Be The One’ in particular. Two years later, she did it again with ‘Future Nostalgia’, featuring the hits ‘Don't Start Now’ and ‘Physical’, and in the process racked up nominations at the American Grammys and Brit Awards. In the UK, she not only won Female Artist of the Year, but also Best Album. Not bad for a 25-year-old! The icing on the cake was to follow: Time magazine included her on its famous list of 100 personalities of the year, alongside Apple's Tim Cook and Billie Eilish!
Her latest album, Radical Optimism, was released in May this year. But these days, it's no longer enough to sing your way to (and remain) a star. Dua Lipa has understood this. For the various Grammy ceremonies she has taken part in, she has generally called on Versace (she even walked in their fashion show in September 2021) and Bulgari jewellery. With cosmetics brand MAC, she offered a limited edition lip gloss called ‘Creemsheen Glass’.
In September 2019, Saint Laurent chose her as the face of its new fragrance ‘Libre’. She even recorded a cover of ‘I'm Free’ by the Rolling Stones for the fragrance's advertising campaign. In February of that year, she officially became (like Angèle for Chanel) an ambassador for Saint Laurent cosmetics.
This brings her one step closer to her childhood dream of creating a wardrobe bearing her name. More surprisingly, in 2020, she offered her song ‘Levitating’ and her face to French mineral water Evian!
In 2023, Dua Lipa also fulfilled another of her most cherished aspirations by metamorphosing into a mermaid for Greta Gerwig's film ‘Barbie’. A discreet debut on the big screen. A year later, thanks to Apple, she got a more substantial role in ‘Argylle’, the thriller by Matthew Vaughn (also Claudia Schiffer's partner).
Between music, fashion and cinema, Dua Lipa's heart sways more than ever. But one thing is certain: she's not likely to get bored in the years to come...
