In 2026, you'll need this in your car in Spain
Anyone driving in Spain will have to carry this device to avoid being fined on Spanish roads. It's an orange distress beacon to be fitted to your car in the event of a roadside problem.
In the event of a breakdown or accident, it is compulsory throughout Europe to fit at least one triangle upstream of the incident. But fitting it can be dangerous or problematic, even when wearing a safety vest. That's why Spain has decided to introduce a new rule, with a device that must be carried on board vehicles. This is an approved orange V-16 beacon. From January 1, 2026, it will be compulsory for all drivers on Spanish roads. Failure to carry or use one will result in a fine of between €80 and €200.
Safe and practical
This battery-operated box can be activated automatically by placing it on the roof (but not the sunroof) or on a door. It can also be switched on manually. The light must flash 360°, with a minimum operating time of 30 minutes (battery to be checked from time to time). The advantage of the flashing beacon is that it can be installed even before getting out of the car. It's also easier to see, especially on bends, at night and in fog. It does not preclude the use of other means of warning in the event of a breakdown or accident. Such a box costs less than €50.
