Scientists concerned as 100 volcanos in Antarctica could erupt soon

Experts have uncovered over 100 volcanoes beneath the ice sheet in western Antarctica, which could potentially erupt and reshape the continent.

These volcanoes are located under the ice cap of West Antarctica, a region described in the study as "particularly vulnerable to collapse, yet its position atop an active volcanic rift is seldom considered."

Scientists have warned that climate change, which is causing ice to melt, is also leading to increased volcanic activity.

As the ice sheet melts, the downward pressure on the surface decreases, creating an uplift effect. This allows magma chambers to expand, accelerating the likelihood of future eruptions.

An eruption in this region could significantly raise sea levels, endangering coastal cities and their surrounding areas.
