Brawl or punitive expedition: 6 soldiers sentenced

A Norwegian court has sentenced six Belgian soldiers to prison terms of 21 to 60 days. They took part in a mass brawl in Åndalsnes, in southwestern Norway. This was announced by the prosecutor's office in Molde, Norway.

The soldiers are members of the Belgian special forces, aged between 22 to 34, and were found guilty of bodily harm and disturbing public order by the Norwegian court.

At the time, in February, the local press had reported a punitive expedition by Belgian soldiers. It seems that it was a result of anger and the fight between the soldiers spread, with civilians present.

During their trial, several of the accused said that they had felt aggression from Norwegian customers in the bar they were in and had been the target of homophobic and racist comments.

At the time of the incident, some 180 Belgian special forces soldiers were in Norway for a winter training course in extreme conditions.

The Belgian authorities responded by indicating that, if necessary, they would take very firm measures.
