Dessert lovers in mourning: inventor of tiramisu is dead
In Italy, Roberto 'Loli' Linguanotto has died at the age of 81: he is the co-inventor of the world-famous dessert tiramisu.
Linguanotto worked in the 1970s at the restaurant Le Beccherie in Treviso, where he accidentally discovered the dessert when, legend has it, he accidentally dropped a bowl of sugar and eggs into a bowl of mascarpone.
Aldo Campe and his wife, owners of the restaurant, perfected the recipe. Tiramisu, consisting of eggs, savoiardi, sugar, mascarpone, coffee and cocoa, quickly became popular and was published in a gourmet magazine in 1983, after which it became world-famous.
The recipe was never patented and there are many stories about the origin of the dessert. Nevertheless, it is generally believed that the recipe originated at Le Beccherie.
