Will Russia trigger another Cuban missile crisis?
Russian warships have again docked off the coast of Cuba. This is the second visit in recent months. What is the purpose of these frequent visits?
For Nikolai Malomuzh, former chairman of Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, this little "game" is a ploy by Moscow to "keep the United States busy".
"The Kremlin is preoccupied with the deployment of additional air defense systems and bases on the territory of Poland and Romania, as well as the creation of electronic air defense shields capable of shooting down missiles on the territory of Poland and Western Ukraine", explains Malomuzh .
For him, "it is therefore quite possible that Russia is creating the appearance of a new threat close to the United States. And it is sending more and more warships to Cuba".
"Russia is sending similar contingents to the coast of Venezuela, including Russia's most powerful frigate, Admiral Gorshkov, to show its willingness to act", Malomuzh adds.
The United States understands the strategic threat, but is not succumbing to Russia's actions.
But according to Malomuzh, this is a "dangerous game" that could tip at any moment. The balance between Russia and America is precarious. The only question that remains is how long these games will continue, and what they will mean for global security.
The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962 and became one of the most tense moments of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. The cause of the tensions was the deployment of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. For several days, the two sides were on the brink of nuclear war.
