Unrest in Europe: Russia wants to move borders in Baltic Sea
The Russian defence ministry has plans to tamper with the borders of territorial waters in the Baltic Sea. A provocation, according to Russia's neighbours.
In the Baltic Sea, Russia has borders with Finland and Estonia and with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, also with Poland and Lithuania. According to plans by Russia's defence ministry, Russia wants to declare some areas in the Gulf of Finland as inland waters and unilaterally shift the boundaries of its territorial waters.
Diplomatic circles in Finland, Sweden and Lithuania are already reacting with dismay to the plans circulated through Russian media: they speak of a new provocation by Russia to intimidate its neighbours. The resulting unrest in the countries around the Baltic Sea could thus become part of Putin's 'hybrid warfare'.
