The world's oldest land animal turns 191
According to the vet who cares for him, the giant tortoise is still alive and well.
The world’s oldest living land animal, Jonathan the tortoise, turned 191, extending his title by a year. According to Guinness World Records (GWR), the giant tortoise from the Seychelles is believed to have been born around 1832. The tortoise’s age was calculated based on the year it was brought from the Seychelles to the island of St. Helena in 1882, when it was 50 years old. Scientists concluded this from a photo taken of the fully grown animal at the time. Heartwarming photos of Jonathan’s birthday celebration have gone viral on social media.
GWR said Jonathan has far surpassed the average life expectancy of its species by 150 years.
