The troubled and frightening relationship between Putin and Trump

Journalist Bob Woodward has published the book "War," which traces the history of three conflicts: the Middle East, Ukraine and Russia, as well as the fight for the presidency of the United States.

In it, he reveals some of the conversations that the current American president, Joe Biden, has had over the years with Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu and Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as Donald Trump.

In War, Bob Woodward quotes Dan Coats, Mr. Trump's former director of national intelligence, who said that the relationship between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin had long puzzled him.

"He reaches out to him and never says anything bad about Putin. To me, that's scary," Mr. Coats told Mr. Woodward.

On the Trump team side, campaign spokesman Steven Cheung responded by launching a lengthy personal attack on the journalist.

“None of these stories that Bob Woodward has made up are true and are the work of a truly deranged and insane man who suffers from a debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Mr. Cheung added: “Woodward is a complete scumbag who has lost his mind, he is slow, lethargic, incompetent and generally a boring and characterless person.”

Still, it is notable that Donald Trump has agreed to numerous interviews with Mr. Woodward, who is considered Washington’s leading chronicler of presidents, since 1989 and whose revelations have rarely been questioned.
