The tone changes: Trump's first blow of pressure on Putin
US President Donald Trump on Monday urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to reach an agreement to “end the war” in Ukraine.
Before being inaugurated as the 47th US president, Trump said he was preparing to meet Putin to “end” the conflict, triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
From the Oval Room of the White House, the new US president insisted to reporters that he “should talk to President Putin (...) who will be very happy to end this war”.
But for the first time, Trump clearly put pressure on his Russian counterpart, claiming that his country was courting disaster if it refused a ceasefire or peace agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
